GLORIA COMPRESSION THERAPY

Compression therapy is used in the treatment of venous diseases and lymphedema.
The aim of treatment is to maintain a high quality way of life despite an insufficient venous system.
The type and extent of treatment depends on the severity of the problem and a doctor should always be consulted.
Gloria medical stockings are prescribed by physicians throughout the world, come in a wide selection of fabrics, styles, sizes, colours and compression ranges.

HOW DOES COMPRESSION WORK?
Compression therapy works by applying controlled pressure to the surface veins, keeping their diameter small and forcing blood back into the deep vein system which in turn pushes the blood uphill towards the heart. Stronger compression is applied at the ankle and decreasing up the leg. Improved blood flow aids in the healing of varicose veins, venous leg ulcer and lymphatic problems.

THE BENEFIT OF GLORIA COMPRESSION THERAPY
• Great for tired, achy legs
• Helps reduce and prevent swelling
• Assists with venous return of blood flow
• Recommended for venous insufficiency
and lymphedema
• Maintaining a good quality way of life

CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION
Continuous evolution of scientific research, progress in technology and ever-growing demands by patients dictate that a modern industrial group must continually strive for improvements. Participation to international congresses and trade fairs, constant ties with doctors, research institutions, orthopaedical engineers and medical experts are a critical factor to our success. This is what drives Gloria and why its products are appreciated all over the world.

VENOUS DISORDERS
Your veins contain valves that help your body pump blood from your legs back up to your heart against the pull of gravity. Venous insufficiency results from a series of disorders where your vein’s valves fail to function properly. This inhibits venous return and causes blood to pool in the veins and increase your venous pressure. This can lead to leg heaviness, swelling, pain, blood clots, varicose veins, dermatitis, and venous ulcers.
Heaviness and pain in the legs may be a sign of a venous disorder. Venous edema or swelling is caused by blood pooling in the lower leg where the capillaries don’t function properly causing water and waste build up in the area. Blood clots block blood flow through the vein causing pressure build up and damage to the vein or valves. Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves and veins in your legs. They are enlarged and twisted, blue or purple veins that appear near the surface of your skin and are sometimes surrounded by thinner red, blue or purple spider veins which are a milder variation of varicose veins. Various forms of dermatitis can result from pooling of blood or waste such as change of skin colour to red or reddish-brown or inflammatory reactions such as eczema. The most severe form is venous leg ulcers which are open weeping wounds that form in the lower leg as a result of poor circulation. They are difficult to heal and the skin surrounding the ulcer is often discoloured, dry and itchy.
Venous disease may be hereditary, but risk factors generally increase with age and include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting or standing, long-distance air travel, pregnancy, hormone medication, surgery, infectious disease, and trauma.

Treatment for venous disease includes:
• Leg elevation to reduce swelling and improve blood flow in the veins.
• Walking to exercise the calf muscles and help them pump blood from your legs back up to your heart.
• Compression stockings such as Gloria® Med medical compression stockings that compress your legs and improve blood flow in your veins by preventing backward flow and pooling of blood.

• Intermittent pneumatic compression pumps that use flexible plastic sleeves with air chambers to reduce swelling and increase blood flow by periodically inflating and compressing the leg before deflating again.
• Compression bandages that provide compression after topical creams and dressings are applied to the skin when treating venous leg ulcers.
• Various medications that may reduce swelling, relieve dermatitis, or treat ulcer infections.

HOW DO COMPRESSION STOCKINGS WORK?
If you suffer from edema, lymphedema, poor circulation or varicose veins where damaged valves prevent your body from effectively pushing the blood up out of your legs – you may experience chronic swelling and pain. Compression stockings work to alleviate this in two ways. Firstly, they increase the pressure in the tissue under the skin which helps move excess fluid back into the capillaries and reduces swelling in your legs. Secondly, they assist the pumping action of your leg muscles as you walk which helps push the blood back up toward your heart. This is achieved through an effective method known as graduated compression where the compression of the stockings is highest in the foot area and gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This counters the natural effect of gravity which results in the pressure within the leg’s veins being the greatest in the ankle area and decreasing as you move up the leg.

WHAT ARE MEDICAL COMPRESSION STOCKINGS?
Medical compression stockings are generally accepted to have a compression level of 15 – 20mmHg or higher. By comparison, anti-embolism stockings have a lower compression level and are usually indicated to maintain normal venous return in bedridden patients. Medical compression stockings come in different styles, materials, and colours – but the most important considerations are the level of compression as recommended by your doctor, and that the stocking is correctly measured and fitted for you.
